How this is worked out
There is no equation for individual water needs, so this calculator combines a rule of thumb with two adjustments and then tells you what it does not know. The base is millilitres per kilogram of body weight, using 33 as the midpoint of the 30 to 35 range used in clinical practice. Bigger bodies lose more water through skin and breathing, which is why weight is the first input.
Exercise is added at roughly half a litre for each half hour, which is a middle estimate: actual sweat rates run from under half a litre an hour to well over two, depending on intensity, heat, humidity and the individual. Heat or a hot workplace adds another half litre, for the same reason.
The total is then split. In a typical mixed diet somewhere around a fifth of your water comes from food — fruit, vegetables, soup, yoghurt, even bread — so the figure to compare with what you drink is lower than the total. For context, the published adequate intakes for adults in the United States dietary reference intakes are 2.7 litres of total water a day for women and 3.7 for men, and those are population figures that already include food.
The eight glasses rule and where it came from
The advice to drink eight glasses of eight ounces a day has no identified scientific origin. When a physiologist went looking for one in 2002, he could not find a study behind it, and pointed out that the most likely source was a recommendation from the 1940s that named a total intake of around 2.5 litres a day — and then noted, in the next sentence, that most of it comes from food.
That dropped sentence is the whole story. A total that includes food became a target for drinking, doubling the apparent requirement, and the round number was easy to repeat. It is not harmful advice for most people — it lands in the right region by accident — but it is not a measurement, and it is not personalised to anything.
What actually decides how much you need
Water leaves the body through urine, through the skin, through breathing and through the gut, and only the first of those is under conscious control. Anything that increases the others increases the requirement, which is why a number based on weight alone can only ever be a starting point.
- Sweat rate — the largest variable by far, and it differs several-fold between people at the same workload.
- Air temperature and humidity, including indoor heating in winter, which is drier than most people expect.
- What you eat: a diet heavy in fruit, vegetables and soup delivers noticeably more water than one built on dry staples.
- Body size and how much of it is muscle, since muscle holds more water than fat.
- Altitude and air travel, both of which increase losses through breathing.
Better feedback than a number
Healthy kidneys manage a wide range of intakes by concentrating or diluting urine, which is what makes the daily target soft in the first place. Two signals cost nothing to read: pale straw urine most of the day suggests you are in a comfortable range, and a consistently dark colour suggests you are behind.
Thirst is the other one, and it is more reliable than its reputation suggests. It lags a little behind losses during hard exercise, which is why drinking to a plan during a long session makes sense, but for ordinary days it does the job. The main exception is older adults, in whom the thirst signal weakens with age, so a habit — a glass with each meal — works better than waiting to feel it.
Tea, coffee, milk and juice all count towards the total. The idea that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you does not hold at ordinary intakes: the mild diuretic effect is smaller than the volume of fluid the drink delivers.
Drinking too much is also a thing
More is not automatically better. Drinking far beyond your losses over a short period can dilute the sodium in your blood, and that is a genuine medical emergency rather than a theoretical risk — it has happened in endurance events and in water-drinking challenges. The practical version of this warning is unremarkable: do not force litres you do not want, and do not treat a bigger number as a better one.

Common questions
Do coffee and tea count towards my daily water?
Yes. At ordinary intakes the diuretic effect of caffeine is modest and does not cancel out the fluid in the cup. Habitual drinkers show even less of an effect.
Why does the calculator show a smaller number for drinks than the total?
Because roughly a fifth of your water arrives with food. A diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and soup pushes that share higher, and a diet of dry staples pushes it lower.
Is there any benefit to drinking more than I need?
For a healthy person with normal kidneys, extra water is mostly extra trips to the bathroom. Claims that a surplus flushes toxins, clears skin or drives weight loss are not supported by good evidence.
How much extra should I drink during exercise?
Roughly half a litre per half hour is a reasonable starting estimate, but sweat rates vary too much for a universal figure. Weighing yourself before and after a long session is the cheap way to measure your own: each kilogram lost is about a litre of fluid.
Does the colour of my urine really tell me anything?
