Why the RDA is a floor, not a target

Protein is used to build and repair tissue, support immune function, and produce hormones and enzymes — a genuinely large share of what your body does structurally depends on a steady supply of it. For a 150-pound (68 kg) adult that works out to roughly 55 grams a day — in the range of an 8-ounce cooked steak. That figure is explicitly the amount that prevents deficiency in nearly all healthy adults, not the amount associated with feeling best or supporting an active lifestyle.

Cost matters in practice. Protein sources vary a lot in price per gram, and building a sustainable target usually means mixing cheaper staples like eggs, legumes, and canned fish with pricier options rather than defaulting to the most expensive source available.

What this cannot tell you

  • It cannot know your kidney or liver function. People managing certain kidney or liver conditions are often advised to limit protein rather than increase it, and that adjustment should come from a clinician who knows the specific condition, not a general calculation.
  • It cannot account for pregnancy or a growth stage. Protein needs shift during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and adolescence in ways the standard adult RDA does not cover.
  • It cannot see your training program. The higher-end ranges for strength training are averages across studies, not a number tailored to your specific routine, recovery, or genetics.
